What are good references to put on a rental application?

Anyone who can testify that you are a capable and / or financially responsible person is a good choice for a reference. It is best to avoid using family as references, as that sometimes reflects poorly upon the applicant.
If professional references are requested, a manager or supervisor that you currently or have previously worked under is a good choice. For rental references a previous landlord is the best option, and they will be the ones most likely to be called. If you plan to use someone as a reference, you should call before you do so, so that they can expect the phone call. You can supply written letters of reference from employers or landlords, if you prefer, to avoid the landlord having to make excessive phone calls.
