What information will I need to fill out a rental application? Why do landlords require them?

Rental applications give a landlord important information about the people that are applying for a lease with their properties. When you fill out an application you will have to supply personal information, such as your previous addresses and landlords, current and previous employers contact info, and information on who else will be occupying the property with you.
A landlord will use the information that you provide to run background and credit checks to determine your eligibility for tenancy. The application does not mean that you are bound to the lease, or to any other kind of contract. It is only a way to let the landlord know that you are interested in the property, and to prove that you are capable of handling the financial responsibility. Sometimes landlords will charge a filing fee for rental applications, but if you can afford the extra expense, it is the best way to show that you are interested in an apartment, and to prove that you are ready to take on the burden of the lease.
